MINUTES from meeting #9
The 9th meeting of the Norwegian Scotch Malt Whisky Society was held at the abode of Mr. Dag Handal on Saturday 22 May 1999.
1) The Secretary noted that Mr. Bjarne Augestad was not dressed as decreed in paragraph 9.1 (Articles of Association), where members are required to wear "a light coloured shirt with bow tie and cufflinks". Mr. Marc Berntssen was lacking a light coloured shirt, but was commended for wearing a bow tie.
2) The Whisky of the Night was "Bowmore", a Islay single malt. Mr. Handal gave a speech enlightening the other members of the background of this excellent Whisky (minuted). Mr. Handal also held his acceptance speech (minuted). The rites confirming both Mr. Handal and Mr. Bjaarstad as full members of the Society, will be conducted by the Grand Master at the next meeting. Mr. Bjaarstad will take the opportunity to hold his acceptance speech at the same meeting.
3) The members agreed that the Whisky of the Night was a well-produced Whisky. Whiskies from Islay tend to have a distinct taste, as seaweed is usually mixed with the peat. Out of a possible 100 points the members allotted the following amount of points to the Whisky; Mr. Bjaarstad - 95, Mr. Haldorsen - 93, Mr. Berntssen - 85, Mr. Jaunsen - 96, Mr. Handal - 97 and Mr. Augestad 93.
4) The following Whiskies where supplied by various members for the enjoyment of the members; "Laphroig" (10 years), "Glen Garioch" (15 years), "Glenfiddich" cask strength - 51% (15 years), and "Dalmore" (12 years)
5) Mr. Augestad shocked the other members by calling the inhabitants of Scotland "paddy", and claiming that Whisky was produced in "breweries". These mistakes where quickly corrected by the other members.
6) Mr. Haldorsen gave a description of his dealings with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Scotland. This society had signalled its opposition to the name "Norwegian Scotch Malt Whisky Society" and recommended that it desisted using this name. The Scottish Society among other things, sells Whisky to its members, something that is illegal in Norway.
7) It was suggested that the Society should consider spending a weekend in Scotland on the so-called "Whisky Trail". All members applauded the suggestion, and Mr. Handal gave a vivid description of his previous travels on this trail. It was suggested that the Society should consider spending a weekend in September or October visiting various distilleries.
8) As Mr. Handal did not have any Scottish music various records from Mr. Handal's large record collection were played. Mr. Handal also demonstrated his equipment by playing a rock video he had procured on his travels. The members commented favourably on the deep thrusting dedication showed by the members of the rock group in exploring and highlighting every detail of the performance in order to entertain the audience, something that is often woefully lacking in the concerts of many other rock groups.
9) The next meeting will be held at the abode of Mr. Marc Berntssen on Friday 25 June 1999 at 7 p.m.
